Ever asked yourself, how often should you post on Social Media?
It’s probably the question that I get asked most frequently.
We seem to believe that social media is going to change our business forever and in fairness, there is a certain amount it can do to increase your exposure.
Social media is a powerful tool that when utilised correctly can enhance a businesses online presence. Using it in the wrong way is often where most businesses come unstuck.
Where to start!
My first point of call is always to discuss what current strategies a business has in place. We take a look at the data and work out what’s been working well and more importantly what’s not.
Posting frequency is actually a small part of the puzzle. The number of posts are totally dependant on your business activity, product, service, customer base and market placement. For some companies, it can be beneficial to post information or updates 30 times a day, for others it would have a detrimental impact and lose hard earned followers.
Your social media channels should be an extension of everything else you do. It’s a great way to promote, highlight and sell products and services and it’s certainly one of the most affordable ways to increase brand awareness.
There are general perceptions about posting frequencies and if you work to these guidelines you shouldn’t be far off the mark. However, the most important thing is to look at what you are posting. I work with many businesses, all of who have a different posting frequency strategy. The main reason is they all offer something different. By investigating your current insights (if you have them) you can understand what and how your audience is interacting with you and what you can do to build on it.
My General Guidelines for Social Media Posting:
Recommendation: 1 – 2 posts per day and between 7 -10 posts per week.
Recommendation: 5 – 7 posts per week, but make the most of Instagram stories too.
Recommendation: 5 – 15 posts per day, but this will really depend on how much content you have available.
Like all advertising or business promotion, you need to engage with the right audience, with the right message, at the right time. This means sometimes targeting certain demographic or geographic areas. Paid advertising can have huge benefits if you are focusing on specific targeting or searching for an exact audience.
Ultimately, all this comes down to time. If you have time to dedicate to having a full social media calendar, then the world is your oyster. Placing good relevant topics of information will keep your audience engaged and informed. Avoid posting for the sake of posting, it often does more harm than good. Keep your message simple and to the point. Where possible drive traffic back to your website and allow customers and prospects can learn more about your business. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the experience.
